Western Australia (WA)
Capital: Perth
Population: 2,000,000
Specialties: Crafts, pearl jewellery, whale and dolphin watching, ethnic cuisines
Western Australia takes up an enormous section of the country. In fact, it is the
largest state in all of Australia and encompasses one-third of the entire landmass.
It is a frontier of vast, haunting beauty, much of which is in a pristine state,
hard to find in today's small world. Take the region known as the Kimberley. It is
practically untouched, so visitors can enjoy the big skies, awe inspiring rock gorges,
twisted rock formations, and untrammelled beaches just as pioneers did a hundred years
ago.

Western Australia is also home to some of the most colourful towns in all of the
country. On the edge of the Kimberley is perhaps the best example: Broome. It began
its existence in 1861 with the discovery of the planet's biggest pearl oyster shell,
called the Pinctada Maxima. Success seekers flocked from all over the Pacific to this
tiny town on the Indian Ocean in the hope of finding an even bigger pearl.
Today, the pearling industry is still a successful venture in Broome, but the town
is a legitimate cultural centre all to itself. With its cuisines from around the
world, white sandy beaches, and overlooking red cliffs, Broome now lures travellers
with its promise of spiritual richness and peace.
To the south, the state has a completely different allure. The southwest section of
the state is for indulging in the local food and wine. Then burn off the calories by
hiking in the ancient Karri forests or taking a jog on the beach.
While to the southeast, gold had been the attraction historically instead of pearls.
Left behind are the old goldmines and boom and bust towns that sprouted next to
them. They are like living antiques that still shine in this dry country.
