Victoria (VIC)
Capital: Melbourne
Population: 5,000,000
Specialties: Art, antiques, tea, skiing, surfing, gourmet food
Never fear. Just because Victoria is the smallest of all of Australia's mainland
states does not mean that the region has little to offer. Actually, some consider
Victoria one of the best sections of the country to live and play.

Take, for example, its capital city of Melbourne. It has the flavour of the Old
World, with its modern tramway public transportation system and its air of confident
sophistication. But it is also a perfect representation of modern Australia. Dozens
of different cultures call Melbourne home, from Lebanese and Middle Easterners to
Chinese and Vietnamese, from Greeks and Italians to American and other New Worlders.
The city is also renown for its culture such as it's performing arts, its museum
culture, and its galleries and art displays. On the flip side of the society, sports
are huge. You probably have heard of the Melbourne Cup, the
Qantas Australia Grand Prix, and the Australian Open Tennis. Australians
play just as many sports as they watch, too.
Surrounding Melbourne is the rest of Victoria, which deserves equal attention. There
are beautiful drives to be had up and down the coastline, as well as voyages to
the enchanting villages in the mountains.
Venture farther away from the capital, and you can meander along arguably some of
the best coastline and views in the world. Great Ocean Road, as it is known,
stretches from Geelong to the border of South Australia - some 300 kilometres.
This spectacular coastal drive takes you past striking natural features such as
The Twelve Apostles, Loch Add Gorge and London Bridge. Or explore the bush territory
of The Grampians or the Victorian Alps. The famous old gold towns of Bendigo and
Ballarat attract their fair share of visitors. As do the enormous waves and brilliant
sun of the beach towns.
