Tasmania is the smallest of all the Australian states. It is on its own, as well,

fly from the mainland Australia to Tasmania, or access the island by sail boats
such as the Spirit of Tasmania out of Melbourne and Sydney.

Called the "Apple Isle", Tasmania gets its nickname in part from its bountiful
agricultural economy. Besides pears, apples, cherries, and berries, Tasmania is
renown for its wine and beer industry, as well as cheeses and other delicacies.
Tasmania also gets its nickname most likely because it has grown to be the
"Apple in the eye" of many of its visitors. It is uncommonly beautiful. Its small
area is packed with crystal lakes, relaxing beaches, roaring waterfalls, and many
other marvels of Nature. The Lake St. Clair National Park, along with its Cradle
Mountain, is possibly the most famous landmark on the island.
The capital, Hobart, is an old fishing village with as much history as any
comparable maritime town in Europe. In large part, Hobart has kept the look and
feel of its roots, and its buildings, bridges, and squares recall a simpler, more
elegant era.
Even though the Apple Isle is jam packed with things to do and see - lakes,
mountains, waterfalls, and beaches to name a few - the state is small enough that
you can explore all of it in a matter of days.
It's difficult to imagine that all of this culture, great food and drink, and
outdoor beauty was once reserved for criminals. Yes, as many British colonies
got their start, Tasmania was once a penal colony. Today, though, it is as far
from being a prison as possible.
