Overview
South Australia is possibly best known for its Mediterranean-like climate and its

bit sweaty. If you don't like clouds and rain, South Australia is for you. It is
the driest state in all of Australia.

Like the wine making regions of southern France, Italy, and California, this
weather makes for hearty, and delicious, grapes. The South Australian wine areas of
Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, and Coonawarra are but just three of the more famous
grape-growing regions. Their history can be traced back to German gentleman farmers
who planted the first vines in the 1840s.
Not only has wine become big business in this state, it has attracted amateur and
professional wine lovers from around the world. Full-fledged resorts, bed and
breakfasts, and every other type of accommodation has sprung up in these areas to
meet the needs of wine tourism.
The capital of this state, Adelaide, should not be passed over, no matter how many
wineries you plan to taste at. Known as the "The City of Churches", Adelaide is a
quaint city on the banks of the Torrens River. It serves as an excellent base camp
if your main destinations are the wineries. But it also makes for a great place
to visit in its own right. It is well known for its fine dining and shopping.
You can still hear, see, and taste echoes of South Australia's past, when more than
160 years ago, English and German settlers laid down roots in the region. The
viticulture is one way, but you can also experience it at a traditional wurst
butcher or in gourmet food shops with their mustards, spreads, chocolates,
and other local delicacies.
