New Zealand North Island
Capital: Wellington
Population: 3,000,000
Specialties: Maori carvings (wood, bone, jade), Maori jewelry (iridescent paua shell or abalone) pottery, wine, wool, sheepskins, fashion and clothing (NomD, Karen Walker, Zambesi, and World)
The north island of New Zealand is home to nearly 75 percent of the entire population
of the country. It is also where the largest city of the nation, Auckland, is. That
doesn't mean, though, that the north island is a bustling and crowded island. On the
contrary, it is a land of pristine beaches, quiet forests, and spectacular volcanic
mountain ranges.

The Waitakere Ranges, for instance, is a regional park outside of Auckland. There,
mountain biking, hiking, and relaxation are in order. Or if surfing is your sport,
paddle over to the beaches at Karekare, Muriwai, Whatipu, Bethels, and Piha. Be sure
to bring a blanket so you can lay out and soak in the seascape after hanging ten.
If you would rather be under the water, strap on your goggles and flippers and
snorkel in the Goat Island Marine Reserve.
Perhaps the main attraction of the north island is its crown jewel of a city,
Auckland. Situated on two large harbours - Manukau to the west and Waitemata to the
east - Auckland is surrounded by natural beauty. But it also pulses with a rich
cultural and entertainment scene.
Auckland is home to European New Zealanders, as well as the descendents of the
original inhabitants of the island, the Maori. It also draws people like a magnet
from the surrounding Pacific islands, from Polynesia to Thailand. They come for the
economic opportunities, the sun-sational weather, and the island's natural splendour.
And if the city ever begins to smother you, which is doubtful, black volcanic beaches,
lush woods, and colourful ocean reefs are only a short car ride, or boat ride, away.
